I think agents might be overhyped as the next big leap in AI—here’s why I’m skeptical

Lately, I keep hearing that autonomous agents—those AI systems that can act, learn, and make decisions on their own—are destined to be the next major breakthrough. The idea is that with enough scalability and autonomy, these agents will reach or even surpass human-like intelligence, transforming everything.

But here’s where I get stuck. This assumption hinges on the belief that complexity and scalability alone will unlock true intelligence. Yet, real-world environments are ridiculously complicated. No matter how many layers of reinforcement learning or simulated environments you throw at an agent, the moment it encounters something genuinely novel—something outside its training—it struggles.

Plus, the challenge of designing a reward function that truly captures what we want is enormous. We’re effectively trying to specify the entire universe of desirable behaviors, but that’s impossible. All it takes is a tiny mis-specification or a loophole—what’s called a ‘reward hacking’—and the agent might do something completely unintended, or even dangerous.

This isn’t just theoretical. We’ve already seen cases where AI systems behave in unpredictable ways because their objectives weren’t aligned perfectly. So, I wonder—are these agents really the transformative force we think, or are they just another step in an ongoing cycle of hype?

I’ve come to believe that these agents could plateau in usefulness, much like previous waves of AI that promised much but delivered only incremental progress. They might introduce new safety and alignment issues that make them even harder to control than traditional models.

It feels like the community is betting heavily on the scalability of agents as the key to AGI, but I worry we’re ignoring fundamental limitations—like the unpredictable nature of real-world environments and the difficulty of specifying truly comprehensive objectives.
