Lately, I’ve been thinking about the staggering stats from the latest UK data—almost 9 million adults are classified as ‘economically inactive,’ meaning they’re not even looking for work, often due to health issues, caregiving, or long-term sickness. Meanwhile, over a million young people are NEETs, not in education, employment, or training.
It got me wondering: with AI and AGI advancing at breakneck speed, could millions more become economically inactive because of automation? We already see AI replacing roles in customer service, content creation, even some medical diagnostics. If AI continues to improve, what happens to the people who are currently unable or unwilling to work?
I know many of us are excited about the innovation and new industries AI could create, but I can’t shake off the worry about those left behind—especially the vulnerable populations. Will society adapt quickly enough? Or are we heading toward a future where a large chunk of our population is sidelined, not by choice, but by circumstance?
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Do you think AI will help us find new opportunities for everyone, or are we risking widening the inequality gap? How can we prepare as a society for this inevitable shift?
Honestly, I’m just trying to make sense of this huge picture and figure out what I should be paying attention to. Looking forward to hearing your perspectives.
