I’ve been thinking about the ‘30% rule’ for AI — do you think it’s enough to keep us honest?

Learning & Education

Lately, I’ve been trying to figure out how to use AI responsibly in my work and studies. There’s this idea called the ‘30% rule,’ which suggests that no more than about 30% of your work should come directly from AI tools. I find it interesting because it feels like a pragmatic way to stay true to my own effort and creativity.

But honestly, I also wonder how practical it is. AI is getting so good, and sometimes it feels like it can do a significant chunk of the work without us even realizing it. For example, I’ve used AI to draft outlines or generate code snippets, but I always tweak and add my own thoughts. Does setting a limit like 30% help keep us accountable, or is it just an arbitrary guideline?

I’m worried that if we rely too heavily on AI, we might lose certain skills or critical thinking abilities. On the other hand, embracing AI as a tool rather than a crutch could be the key to innovation. How do you all strike that balance? Do you follow any rules or guidelines?

Would love to hear from people who are actively trying to use AI responsibly. Are there other rules or frameworks you follow? Or are we just all flying blind in this new era?

Honestly, I’m just trying to figure out how to stay authentic while leveraging AI’s power without losing touch with my own skills or values.

Sorry if this is dumb, but I’m really new here and still trying to understand all this AI stuff. The ‘30% rule’ sounds like a good idea, but honestly, I’m not sure how to even measure that. Like, if I use AI to help with a paper or project, how do I know if I’m staying within that limit? And do I need to keep track of every tiny thing I do with AI? I also worry that if I rely on AI too much, I might lose some skills, but I also see how it can be super useful for learning and efficiency. Is there a simple way to balance using AI without overdoing it? Or are these rules just kind of a personal thing? I’d love to hear what others are doing because I want to be responsible but also not get left behind.
